Food Review: Austin Steak House

Austin Steak House

The other day the missus and I finally got the chance to try out the latest food joint that is the buzz in lil' old Bandar Baru Bangi, Austin Steak House. I have been hearing about this place and its fantastic food from my sister in law, Kak Ayu. So, on our way back to Shah Alam after visiting the in-laws (Azhani's parents), we had a quick pit stop at Austin Steak House.

Austin Steak House

You can't miss the place as the bright "AUSTIN STEAK HOUSE" signage can be seen far away. We got there before 8 o'clock as advised by Kak Ayu. She said the place would pick up pace after 8. She was right. Once we landed our bums and a few minutes passed by, people started to fill up the place. By the way, parking space is easy enough, so no problem there.

The crowd starts to pack Austin

The ambiance of Austin Steak House is based on a western themed eating joint. Horse cart wheels on the ceiling, bottles on the shelves and wooden furniture used absolutely makes you feel like you are in a old western tavern. A good start to a potentially fine dining experience.

On to the food. Azhani ordered the Chicken Courdon Blue. This dish consists of a piece of deep fried chicken with cheese stuffed into the chicken served with a rich portion of thick and tasty gravy with pieces of chopped button mushrooms. A handful of crinkle cut french fries and coleslaw put into a fresh piece of lettuce finished this dish.

The price for this tasty dish is RM 10.90.

Austin Steak House's Chicken Cordon Blue

I on the other hand ordered the all time western food favourite, chicken chop or in this case Austin Steakhouse Special Chicken Chop. The price also might have influenced me a bit as it was only RM 8.90.

Austin Steak House Special Chicken Chop

The dish is made up of a big piece of deep fried chicken smothered with a very generous portion of thick gravy with pieces of button mushrooms. Again, a handful of crinkle cut french fries and coleslaw. The grave really complimented the chicken well. Two thumbs up from me.

mouth watering Austin Steak House Chicken Chop

Both of us ordered different drinks. Azhani ordered the Milo Ice and I had the Lemonade or Limau Ais. The big glasses used reminds me of the huge glasses served at William SS2 PJ. Both drinks are priced at RM 2 each. Other drinks on the menu were fruit juices like apple, watermelon, honeydew and the usual fruit juices. They are priced at RM 2.50 and are also served in those huge glasses.

Ice Lemonade and Iced Milo

Other dishes on the menu that I will surely try when I get the chance to go to Austin again will be the Salmon, Lamb Chop or even the Sizzling Steak. This won't do any good to my ever expanding waistline. But it is hard to resist the charm and temptations on offer at Austin Steak House.

Name:Austin Steak House
Address: No. 55 GF, Jalan Kajang Impian 2/1, Taman Kajang Impian, 43650 Bandar Baru Bangi Selangor
Food: Western Theme
Operating Hours: 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Other comments: Enough parking space, family friendly and rightly priced.

McDonald's in a Pickle Over an Extra Slice of Cheese

I'm so gonna get fired for putting an extra piece of lettuce in that Big Mac

McDonald's had to pay a former employee in one of its Dutch outlets after firing her for putting an extra slice of cheese in a workmate's burger during that friend's lunch break. The courts decided that she was wrongly dismissed and Micky Dees were ordered to pay the remaining 5 months of her contract which was around 6,000 Dollars and also court fees.

McDonald's defended their actions that she had broken the rules that forbids employees to give gifts and free stuff to family members and friends.

Kinda funny that a Big Mac (no pun intended...not!) of a company like McDonalds can get worked up because of an extra piece of food but doesn't mind being robbed gallonf of Coke refills everyday.

Introducing the KFC Zinger Tower Burger

KFC Zinger Tower Crunch Combo

Lately, my wife have been craving for KFC, well in particular the KFC Zinger Tower Burger. The older generation always say to try meet those pregnant woman cravings as long as they are reasonable. Well, KFC is reasonable enough except when it is craved on a daily basis. Kopak wooo..

So, last weekend during our weekly dating nights my wife bought me my first KFC Tower Zinger (after telling me for the whole week how she loved the burger).  Lets just say when I go to KFC, burgers are the last thing I think of having. Well, I'll make an exception for her sake.

We had the Zinger Tower Combo. When you pay RM 10.50 for the  Zinger Tower Crunch Combo meal, you will get the Zinger Tower Burger, 7 UP Revive and Chacho's corn chips with dip. I love chips and dips. Hey, they rhyme.

Zinger Tower being a little shy

The KFC Zinger Tower Burger is made of fresh lettuce, zinger chicken fillet, cheese, hash browns, zesty chili lime sauce with two soft sesame buns. This Zinger Tower somewhat changed my opinion on KFC burgers. The hash brown crumbled when you bite into it, the zinger fillet is juicy and just about right. The zesty lime sauce made it all come together.

The Zinger Tower is about to be devoured by a champion

My wife couldn't make the whole burger to fit her mouth. So, she divided it into two pieces. Well, for me being a burger & sandwich lover, took the whole burger in one piece and savoured the taste. Champion.

Eventhough KFC still cannot overtake the other burger establishments in the burger/sandwich stakes, the Zinger Tower shows me that they are in the right direction.

War of The Burgers

There are a lot of tasty and juicy burgers out there. I'll just put the top 3 burgers. Each one are the marquee or trademark burgers for each seller. Let me know which one do you like or better if you got other choices. If you have a good one, I might go out and find it.

So, here are the contenders:

The Whopper
from Burger King

Big Mac
from
McDonalds

Burger Ramly Ayam Double Special with Cheese
from Ramly Burger

Like me, I'll always take Burger Ramly over the others anytime. Especially if you wrap the burger with eggs and toss in some mayo and cheese. My mouth is watering already. How about you??

Ramly Burger is now Dato' Ramly Burger

Tuan Haji Ramly Moknin was conferred the title Dato' by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah in conjunction with the Sultan's 64th Birthday celebration last week.

I think it is about time that this Malaysian institution is given the recognition that it deserves. All Malaysians know the awesome taste of a juicy Ramly Burger Special. A little bit background story on  the Ramly Burger. It started off as a small family business operating from a cart at Lorong Haji Hussain in Kuala Lumpur. Seeing that their family recipe was a big hit with the masses, Haji Ramly Moknin and his wife Puan Hajjah Shalah Siah Abdul Manap setup a meat processing factory and called it Ramly Food Processing. From there on, a legend was born.

Again, I would like to congratulate Dato' Haji Ramly Moknin on this proud moment for him and his family.

Gelak-Gelak

Enjoy the video.

Bo Is Getting Fluffier By The Day

I stood in front of the mirror this morning with all my crowning glory self and realised something that I really did not want to admit. I am getting fluffier by the day! Damn man! Its getting so ridiculous to see me turning into a blimp.

I hope my "fluffy"ness doesnt get to a point where I resemble this guy;

Gabriel Iglesias is very proud of his "fluffy"ness. All the power to him, man. He is a damn hillarious fluffy latino.

But for me with my futsal and tennis, the extra weight would not help. My pregnant wife also maybe is contributing to my added weight as she is "wanting" to eat stuff but usually cannot finish it off. So, I will be the "cleaning crew" or Majlis Bandaraya to finish off the food as she does not want it to go to waste. Yeah, lame excuse but thats the reality of things.

If anyone out there can give some suggestions on how to curb my new found "fluffy" ness, I am all ears.

Shyet-Li's Kopitiam @ Jaya 33 Section 13 Petaling Jaya

Shyet-Li's Kopitiam that I went is situated at Ground Floor, Jaya 33, Section 13 Petaling Jaya (opposite the demolished Jaya Supermarket @ Sect 14 PJ). I knew later that they have the main branch in Great Eastern Mall, Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.

It's a chinese styled kopitiam and its menu consist mostly of Asian delicacies. The food is halal, so no worries for Muslim patrons. You can have breakfast, lunch, hi tea and dinner or even just drop by for a casual drink. It is suitable anytime.

There is ample parking space at Jaya 33, so finding parking space would be a breeze. Then, you can take a lift to Shyet-Li's Kopitiam (ground floor).

The kopitiam's decor is styled according to the old coffee shops, which to me the best ones were in Ipoh. There would be an old bicycle at the door and framed pictures hanging on the walls. But you dont eat decorations, paintings or even bicycles when you go to these places. Service, prices and most important of all, the food is what you look out for. But the cosy decore and ambience sets your mood.

Once you're seated, a staff will immediately attend to and will take down your order and they are most helpful in explaining the available options on the menu to you. The prices are reasonable and the menu describes each dish from the starters to desserts in detail. So you would know what you would be ordering and can also make requests.

I had the Nasi Goreng Kampung with Satay. The satay wasn't put on sticks but presented as satay bits. The rice and satay were rightly proportioned with some fish chips (keropok ikan) on the side. To wash it down, I had some Cham Ice. The cham was just nice, not too sweet and yet tasty. The Nasi Goreng was priced at RM 12.50 and the iced cham at RM 3.80, which I  think is reasonable when you are left satisified at the end of your meal.

Nasi Goreng Kampung with Satay

Nasron (my collegue at Tune Talk) had Uncle Dory's Catch. It was fragrant rice with garlic fish which I think looked really nice and it tasted even better. Nas also had the Cham Ice. The price for the Uncle Dory's Catch was RM16.90.

Other tasty dishes that are available are

Roasted Chicken with Mixed Veggies

Gado-Gado

Nasi Ayam Special with Roasted Chicken

Hot Kopi 'O'

You don't have enough balls in you

As usual some of us at Tune Talk would go down to the mamak in front of the office to have afternoon tea. This time we'll name her Betty. Betty bought some kuih and told us to share it with her as she bought them especially for sharing. She brought the kuih and instantly said to Nas "Nas, take some banana balls. You dont have enough balls inside of you". All of us at the table burst into laughter while Betty got blank faced and asked , "What??!!".

Nas asked her, "
What did you call those things again?" Betty again said, "Banana balls"!!. Again the group wailed in laughter and leaving Betty red.

You guys wanna know what banana balls are? Here you go...

Cekodok Pisang aka Banana Balls

If you feel you need some "balls", get some cekodok pisang or like Annie calls em' banana balls...hehehe..

STROKE

The other day my collegue was telling me about his aunty who passed away due to stroke. She was a healthy 40 year old lady and died shortly after having a BBQ at a relatives place.

My collegue told me that she took a tumble during the BBQ and stayed down for quite some time before picking herself up. She got up and said she insist she was fine after they offered to call the ambulance over. She went on enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Her husband called later that evening and told that his wife was taken to the hospital (passed away at 4 a.m.).

Apparently she suffered from a stroke that could had been reversed if the symptoms were catched earlier.

Recognizing a stroke, SIMPLE!
Remember STR
S - Get te person to SMILE
T - Get the person to TALK coherently. For example, "What a nice day we are having"
R - Get the person to RAISE his/her's both arms.

Another symptom is to ask him to stuck out his tongue. If the tongue is crooked or goes to one side to the other, it is also an indication of a stroke.

So, whenever a person bumps his/her head or falls down, try to carry out these simple exercises. Better still, go directly to the nearest medical facility.

Kari Kepala Ikan Kampung Attap

This is one of the most talked about fish curry head @ kari kepala ikan places in KL. It is located smack right in the middle of metropolitan KL at Jalan Kampung Attap, under a few trees next to its original restaurant.

Seeing the crowd there, you know you're in the right place to satisfy your kari kepala ikan cravings.
Parking spots would be limited but when you got the munchies for good curry head fish, a man will do what a men gotta do. Trust me.

There were 9 of us. We started ordering the usual....drinks (my personal fav teh o ais limau @ ice lemon tea), white rice, honey fried chicken, chili bawang, squid curry and finally 2 curry head fish. Yup....2 heads!!!

While waiting for the food to come, I had a starter. Yep, these kinda places also have starters.

Starter...

Then, the food started coming,

Here is a close up of the fish head before it being devoured by 9 hungry guys,

Second head,
The squid curry is also a must have. I recommend it. Alang2 nak makan kepala ikan.

Squid curry

The other food compliments the fish head & squid curry very well.
Cili Bawang @ Green Chilies and Onions Mix

Cili bawang. Its mixture of green chillies, onions, soy sauce and lime. It makes the experience more enjoyable.

Ayam Goreng Madu @ Honey Fried Chicken

Finally, whats left of the curry head,

You dont need to go for the "makan berhidang" style like we did, you can choose to have it the
nasi campur style.
Whatever style you want to have it, you'll be promised a lasting dining experience.

Another thing to add, toss away the spoon and fork. Go in with both hands. More kick to it. Believe me. But just be prepared having your hands smelling of curry for the next couple of days. I take it as a momento of a wonderful dining experience. Hmm...nice.

The price if you're having the curry fish head would be a little expensive. But RM 25 (approx.) for 2 persons serving I think is reasonable.

Give it a shot and lemme know you're own experience.
